Separating and Disposing of Household Garbage

If local residents are to live comfortably garbage must be disposed of according to the regulations. This means separating the garbage according to category and putting it out on the designated days at a designated garbage collection point. If the regulations are not observed the garbage is not collected and local residents will be displeased. Kindly remember that the garbage collection points rely on the good will of the landowner or supervisor, and on the cooperation of everyone in the neighbourhood. Garbage categories
- General garbage: Collected twice a week. (Kitchen waste, paper, bags, etc.)
- Non-combustible garbage: Collected once a month. (Glass, metal, etc.)
- Large combustible garbage: Collected once a month. (Futons, carpets, etc.)
- Recyclable items
- Cans, bottles and jars, PET bottles: Collected once a month
- Plastic containers and packaging: Collected twice a month
- Items that cannot be left at a garbage collection point: Refrigerators, freezers, TVs, air conditioners, washing machines, tumble dryers, computers, motorbikes, tyres, batteries, bricks, paints, pesticides, fire extinguishers, etc.
* Items such as newspapers, magazines, cardboard and milk cartons are collected for recycling by the Children's Association or other local groups, as well as by used paper recyclers.Dates and collection places depend on the area you live in.You can find out by asking neighbors or the Environmental Safety Section. General garbage:

Please use a semi-transparent or transparent bag. Please do not put out non-combustible garbage.
Soft toys, plastic toys, video tapes, CDs, floppy disks, waste paper, paper diapers (please dispose of the contents down the toilet), kitchen waste/food scraps (please drain well first)
Non-combustible garbage:
Collected: Once a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m.
Please remove any parts that can be burned
- Bicycles (please clearly label as garbage)
- Electrical appliances (excluding refrigerators, freezers, TVs, air conditioners, washing machines, tumble dryers and computers)
- Stoves (please remove the batteries and any kerosene)
- Rice bowls
- Ceramics and porcelain
- Ashtrays
- Wire coat hangers
- Electric cords
- Light bulbs
- Tumblers
- Cosmetics
- Air freshener bottles
- Heat-resistant glass, cutlery, nails, needles (These are dangerous so please wrap them in paper or cloth, or put them in a box and label it)
- Metal caps, lids and stoppers
Items to be put out separately- Aerosol cans
You must make hole in them, otherwise they may start a fire when they are collected. Please pierce the can when you are in a well-ventilated place far from any fire. - Lighters
Please use up all the lighter fuel. - Fluorescent tubes, mercury thermometers, batteries
Please take button batteries and NiCad batteries to a retailer for disposal.
Large combustible garbage
Collected: Once a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m.
Please dispose of easily-removable metal, glass or mirrors in the non-combustible garbage. Please break large items into small pieces.
- Ski boots
- Child car seats
- Big plastic items
- Small quantities of branches and twigs (10 cm or less in diameter, cut into lengths of 1 m or less and tied into bundles)
- Wooden furniture
- Leather items (bags, elementary school satchels, etc.)
- Futons, mattresses, carpets, electric blankets, electric carpets (tied down small)
Recyclable items
[Cans]
Collected: Once a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m.
Cans such as those for beer, juice, powdered milk, sweets and canned food are collected. Please only put out empty cans. Aerosol cans must be pierced and put out as non-combustible garbage.
(1) Rinse out the can. (2) Put it in the recycle bin (aluminium and steel cans go in the same one).
[Bottles and jars]
Collected: Once a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m. Bottles and jars such as those for beverages, jam, bottled food and condiments are collected. Please put glass products such as rice bowls, cosmetic bottles, tumblers and light bulbs in the non-combustible garbage.
(1) Remove the cap (plastic caps are disposed of as 'plastic containers and packaging' and metal caps as non-combustible garbage). (2) Rinse out the bottle or jar. (3) Sort according to color (3 categories: colorless and transparent, brown, other colors) (4) Put it in the recycle bin.
[PET bottles]
Collected: Once a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m.
PET bottles that contained beverages, soy sauce, men tsuyu (noodle sauce), mirin (sweet rice wine for cooking) or vinegar are collected.
(1) Remove the cap (plastic caps are disposed of as 'plastic containers and packaging' and metal caps as non-combustible garbage). (2) Remove the label (the label is disposed of as 'plastic containers and packaging'). (3) Rinse out the PET bottle. (4) Flatten it. (5) Put it in the recycle bin.
[Plastic containers and packaging]
Collected: Twice a month Time: Before 7:30 a.m.
Please wash the contents out thoroughly. "Plastic containers and packaging" means items made of plastic that were used to pack products. Please put them in a semi-transparent or transparent garbage bag. Please do not include products that are themselves plastic, such as CD cases, sponges, vinyl cord, stockings, etc.
- Plastic shopping bags (from supermarkets)
- Plastic bottles (shampoo, conditioner, cooking oil, washing up liquid, sauce, wax)
- Plastic cups (yogurt, pudding, ice cream)
- Plastic containers (egg boxes, tofu boxes, seaweed containers)
- Tubes (toothpaste, wasabi paste, ketchup, mayonnaise)
- Polyethylene bags (outer covering of cigarette packets, instant ramen bags, sweet bags, rice bags)
- Caps (caps from tubes or detergent bottles, PET bottle caps, bath additive caps, instant coffee jar lids)
- Wrapping film (wrapping film for yogurt or natto sets, cup noodles, meat, fish, etc.)
- Polystyrene containers (trays and bowls for instant foods, fish, vegetables and ready-cooked dishes)
- Polystyrene (break it down and bag it).
[Used paper]
Put it out for a local group such as the children's association or for a used paper recycler. When you do so, please tie the bundle with paper cord and don't use vinyl cord or plastic bags.Carbon paper, paper cups, photographs and thermal paper cannot be recycled.- Newspapers

[Milk cartons]
Please dispose of silver-lined cartons, such as sake cartons, with the general garbage. If the carton has a spout, please remove it.
(1) Rinse out the cartons. (2) Open them out and dry them. (3) Tie them into a bundle with paper cord and put them in the recycle bin.
[Used clothing and cloth]
Please launder used clothing and cloth before handing it to staff at one of the facilities below. Please put it in a semi-transparent bag or a cardboard box, or tie it into a bundle.
However, the following items cannot be accepted. (Please take them to another designated location for disposal.)
- School uniforms
- Skiwear
- Clothes with a lining
- Work clothes
- Hangers
- Insecticide
- Futons and carpets
- Stockings
- Raincoats
- Dry cleaning bags
- Shoes, bags, etc.
Milk cartons and used clothing and cloth can be taken for recycling to the facilities below on days that they are open.- Central Community Center
